Hardness, Iron, and Manganese Are Different Water Concerns

The plumber completes the piping modifications, installs the treatment equipment and bypass arrangement, provides the required regeneration drain connection, restores water service, and checks the completed installation for leaks and proper operation.

Why Regeneration Settings Matter
Regeneration restores the resin bed so the system can continue removing hardness minerals. Every regeneration cycle uses water and salt, so the controls should reflect actual treatment demand.
A system that regenerates too often may:

- Increase maintenance
- Cycle more often than the household requires
A unit that waits too long between regeneration cycles can allow hardness to begin passing through the system.
Correct sizing and configuration help keep that balance practical.
Should Exterior Water Bypass the Softener?
For many homes, treating irrigation water provides little benefit. The same can be true for some exterior hose bibs depending on how they are used.
Leaving appropriate outdoor plumbing ahead of the softener can reduce the amount of water passing through the resin bed, which may reduce salt consumption and regeneration frequency.
The existing pipe layout determines how practical this is, so the decision should be made during the plumbing inspection rather than after the equipment is already installed.
Water Softening and Water Heater Scale
Hardness minerals become particularly noticeable where water is repeatedly heated. Calcium and magnesium can contribute to mineral scale and sediment inside certain water-heating systems.
Reducing hardness may help limit new mineral accumulation, but a softener will not repair a water heater that already has a failed element, ignition issue, leaking tank, damaged valve, or other mechanical problem.
